First Snowfall Creates Havoc on Area Roadways

By Assistant Fire Chief Jason Brooks
December 8, 2013

During the afternoon hours, the Twin Valley area and surrounding region were hit with the first snowfall of the season that brought several unexpected inches. Original weather predictions called for a “minor coating”, which unfortunately caught drivers off guard and lead to multiple vehicle accidents throughout the area. TVFD firefighters and Elverson EMS investigated numerous “property damage” accidents on local roadways and worked for several hours at a large incident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the Twin Valley local. The westbound lanes of the turnpike were shut down for hours between Downingtown and Morgantown after a 50+ vehicle accident, while eastbound traffic from Morgantown was restricted after almost a dozen separate accidents occurred in those lanes. Unfortunately, one subject was fatally struck by another car while trying to help others at the large pile up of vehicles. Throughout the rest of the evening, 69 units also handled a fire alarm and a tanker standby at Glenmoore FC while their crews were in service at a house fire. Thoughts and prayers go out from TVFD to the family and friends affected by the loss of life on the turnpike and the large amount of damage caused by this snowstorm. Please take this tragedy as a reminder to use caution and try and stay in your vehicle in the event of an accident until emergency services arrive onscene to assist in securing a safe area. A thank you also goes out from the 69 officers and members to the multiple Fire/EMS mutual aid units that provided assistance to TVFD.
