3rd Annual BBQ Competition Held

May 19, 2019

This weekend, TVFD's 3rd annual BBQ competition attracted hundreds to Morgantown to support the fire department. The smell of barbecued chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket filled the air over Friendship Park. The Twin Valley Fire & Smoke fundraiser was open to the public, and those in attendance had the opportunity to view the competitors unique BBQ set ups throughout the park grounds, as well as purchase items from vendors and local businesses. Friday evening featured a first responder wing cookoff challenge that was judged by the public. A dozen departments made up of fire, EMS, and police, prepared their special wing recipes, and were served by TVFD members. Honey Brook Fire Company team had the highest vote by the public and was awarded a trophy and smoker grill. On Saturday, preparing for the big judging event, certified judges gathered to begin their taste testing. At all sanctioned competitions, judges must be certified by KCBS and before judging started, they all stand, put their hands in the air and recite their official oath. They employ a blind judging process at all official contests, none of the judges knowing whose sample they are judging. They each get at least six samples of each type of meat to judge. The criteria are appearance, taste and tenderness, on a scale from 1 to 9. This is a very expensive competition for the cook teams in both time and money so the judging is very formal, very controlled and very fair. At the big finale, Organizer Sandy Fulton and Deputy Chief Pete Hornberger awarded the prize money, trophies, and ribbons to the Grand Champion, as well as the winners in all four categories including: chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket. The Grand Champion, Drilling and Grilling, automatically wins a spot in the professional competition in 2020. The TVFD members would like to thank all of the competitors, sponsors, helpers, and the community who made this event a success!!
