Training Continues with Extrication Competition
By Deputy Fire Chief Jason Brooks
July 10, 2014
At TVFD's weekly drill night, a friendly extrication competition was held between members on two donated vehicles. The training was headed up by Chief 69 (Hornberger), and included a twist of only being able to use one hydraulic rescue tool per team. Primarily during vehicle accident extrications, multiple hydraulic tools are used to gain quick access to the patients, but unfortunately they can malfunction sometimes, causing the need for other methods to be utilized. This training encouraged firefighters to think outside of normal operations and utilize different equipment and hand tools that otherwise would not often be necessary when operating with hydraulic tools. Each team was instructed to stabilize the vehicle, remove all glass, "roll the dashboard", remove all doors and the roof, and gain access to the trunks. Various and creative methods were used by both crews to complete the tasks and "old school" knowledge was positively built upon.
Thank you to Stacey's Towing and Jill Greene for the donation of the vehicles.
