One person was killed and three others were injured in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Morgantown that backed up traffic in the westbound lanes for miles, state police said.
Kristin Marie Green, 20, Deer Park, N.Y., a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead in Reading Hospital at 5:54 p.m., according to Deputy Joel Bonilla of the Berks County coroner's office.
She was flown to the hospital by helicopter following the crash shortly after 4 p.m. in Caernarvon Township.
Green died from injuries suffered in the accident but the manner of death remains under investigation.
A relative told police Green was headed to Pennsylvania for a few days with friends.
Two other people injured in the crash were also flown to Reading Hospital.
A third person was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
State police did not release the names of the injured and their conditions could not be determined.
Investigators said initial accounts indicate the vehicle's driver fell asleep and the vehicle went off the road at a bend and struck a tree.
State police closed the westbound lanes of the turnpike intermittently so that the three medical helicopters could land.
