For tonight's weekly training, instructors from Good Fellowship EMS Training Institute and Chester County’s Overdose Task Force reviewed the ongoing epidemic of opioid overdoses in the area and how administration of Narcan by first responders can help save lives. At times, our local ambulance is unavailable on another call and TVFD arrives first to cardiac arrests that are sometimes due to an overdose. Another cover ambulance could be coming from a distance, and we are now equipped and trained to administer this medication to assist in saving lives from opioid overdoses prior to EMS units arrival. These Narcan kits can also be utilized on our own personnel if we unfortunately come into contact with opioid laced materials on incidents, and suffer an accident overdose ourselves. The kits are free to first responders through a state grant, and can also help gather data when properly used in emergencies. Special thanks to the instructors for taking their time to educate TVFD’s crew and providing several free kits to add to all of our apparatus medical bags.
