Fatal Accident on the Turnpike

At 4:34am, TVFD was dispatched to a tractor trailer fire on the eastbound Pennsylvania Turnpike in Caernarvon Berks. Responding unit were advised of multiple conflicting reports of both a truck fire on the eastbound side, as well as a truck accident on the westbound side. An ambulance and medic unit were also added to the assignment with information indicating the driver to be injured. Chief 69 (Brooks) arrived confirming the reports to be the same incident on the westbound side with a tractor trailer off the roadway, and established "Turnpike Command". Upon further investigation, an active engine fire was found with extension into the cab of the truck, and the driver appeared to have suffered from fatal injuries. The crew from Ambulance 89-1 confirmed the driver had succumb from injuries and cancelled the medic unit. First arriving personnel knocked the fire down with extinguishers, until arrival of Engine 69-5. The engine crew extinguished the remainder of the fire and performed overhaul. EMS was released from the scene and fire crews remained awaiting the arrival of the coroner. State Police assumed control of the scene and released TVFD units.

Units cleared at 6:14am.
